Staff Sergeant Courtney Martin, originally from Stafford, Virginia, joined the Hellcats in January 2014. She began her studies for a bachelor’s degree in music performance at Duquesne University under the direction of Jennifer Conner. In 2009, she transferred to The University of Texas at Austin. In 2012, she earned a Bachelor of Music in performance, studying with Marianne Gedigian. While at UT Austin, she was a member of the wind ensemble and symphony orchestra. Shortly after graduating, Staff Sergeant Martin joined the Army Band Program. She served at the 392nd Army Band in Fort Lee, Virginia, beginning in December 2012. While there, she was actively involved in the woodwind quintet The Liberty Winds, performing at graduations and in the community. She was also a part of the public affairs office, where she served as the band’s photographer and promoted the band via social media and the internet. Prior to joining the Army, Staff Sergeant Martin was very active in volunteering in her community. She enjoys teaching flute lessons and running flute choir.
Staff Sergeant Ashley Mendeke became a member of the West Point Band’s Hellcats in August of 2013. Prior to joining the Hellcats, Staff Sergeant Mendeke was a freelance flutist and instructor in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She has also performed as a member of the American Wind Symphony and as a featured musician with the Lewisville Lake Symphony's International Chamber Music Series. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Staff Sergeant Mendeke completed Bachelor of Music degrees in flute performance and music education as a student of Mary Karen Clardy. She was selected as the University of North Texas 2010-2011 Presser Scholar, and was recipient of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund's National Academic Scholarship, winner of the Sigma Alpha Iota Triennial Performance Award, winner of the S.A.I. Denton Alumnae Chapter's Performance Scholarship, and winner of the 2010 TMTA Young Artist Competition.
