Staff Sergeant Rachel Hertzberg

Staff Sergeant Rachel Hertzberg, originally from Montvale, New Jersey, joined the West Point Band in January of 2010. She earned her Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University, where she studied with Rex Martin. She subsequently attended Arizona State University, where she studied with Sam Pilafian, earning her Master of Music in tuba performance. Staff Sergeant Hertzberg has attended various summer music festivals, including the Aspen Summer Music Festival and Institute, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.

Staff Sergeant Keith Kile

Principal Tuba

Staff Sergeant Keith Kile, originally from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, joined the West Point Band in 2015 and was appointed principal tuba in 2018. In addition to his duties with the West Point Band, Staff Sergeant Kile is an active freelancer, performing regularly with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, and Collective Brass Quintet. He is also on faculty at the New School's Mannes Prep. Prior to moving to New York, ​Staff Sergeant Kile performed regularly on both tuba and euphonium with the Mr. Jack Daniel's Original Silver Cornet Band, the Hal Leonard Studio Ensemble, and numerous regional orchestras in the Midwest and Southeast, and served in the 129th Army National Guard Band for eleven years. As a successful soloist, Staff Sergeant Kile was won the prestigious Jacobs School of Music Concerto Competition and is now a regular performer at conferences around the United States. Staff Sergeant Kile holds a Bachelor of Music in music education from Tennessee Tech University, a Master of Music and Performer Diploma from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Staff Sergeant Andrew Dougherty

Staff Sergeant Andrew Dougherty is a native of Fairfax, Virginia, and joined the tuba section of the West Point Band in November of 2017. He holds a Bachelor of Music from George Mason University, where he studied under Andrew Hitz, and a Master of Music from the University of Maryland, where he studied under David Fedderly. Staff Sergeant Dougherty formerly played with Brass of the Potomac, the ITEA winning tuba and euphonium quartet NOVATEQ, and other band, orchestral, and chamber ensembles around the Washington, D.C. area. He was selected to perform as principal tuba with the Disney All-American College Band of 2014 in Anaheim, California, under the direction of Ron McCurdy, where he performed with artists such as Jiggs Whigham, Rex Richardson, John Clayton, and Wayne Bergeron. In the spring of 2017, Staff Sergeant Dougherty won the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” Mock Band Audition, and was selected for the United States Air Force Band’s Collegiate Symposium.

Staff Sergeant Dougherty currently resides in New York with his wife, Becca Saran, and enjoys hiking with his dog, cooking, and golfing.
